New York. A vegetarian diet with less salt and sugar, adequate rest, moderate exercise and a social life cut the risk of death by 28 percent and cancer by 29 percent. This has been found in a new research.
People in the UK who follow a Mediterranean lifestyle were found to have a lower risk of mortality from all causes and cancer.
The researchers analyzed the habits of 110,799 members of the UK Biobank Group, which practices the Mediterranean lifestyle (MedLife) in England, Wales and Scotland.
Lead author Mercedes Sotos Prieto, who wrote the research, said the Autonomous University of Madrid (AUM) and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health studies suggest that it is possible for non-Mediterranean populations to adopt a Mediterranean diet using locally available products.
“We are looking at lifestyle changes and their positive effects on health,” said Prieto, an assistant professor of environmental health at the Harvard Chan School.
The participants in the study ranged in age from 40 to 75. They provided information about their lifestyle according to the three categories measured by the index – consumption of Mediterranean food; Mediterranean Dietary Habits’ and ‘Physical Activity, Leisure, and Social Life’.
Of those included in the study, 4,247 died of some disease; 2,401 from cancer; and 731 died of heart disease.
The researchers observed an inverse association between adherence to the Mediterranean lifestyle and risk of mortality.
Adherence to a Mediterranean lifestyle was independently associated with reduced risk of all-cause and cancer mortality.
Low risk of “physical activity, rest, and social life” was most strongly linked, the researchers said, and also had a low risk of heart disease mortality.
