San Francisco. Replacing animal-based foods like red and processed meats with plant-based foods like nuts or legumes may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, and death overall. . This has been found in a new study.
The study, published in the journal BMC Medicine, analyzed the results of 37 prior studies and its findings highlighted the potential health benefits of including more vegetarianism in the diet.
The researchers reported, “Our findings indicate that plant-based (e.g., nuts, legumes, whole grains, olive oil) rather than animal-based (e.g., red and processed meat, eggs, dairy, poultry, butter) “Adoption of these foods is associated with benefits for cardiometabolic health and mortality from any cause.”
They found that replacing one egg with nuts a day reduced heart disease mortality. Using olive oil in place of butter yielded similar results.
Replacing 50 grams of processed meat with 28 grams of nuts a day reduces the risk of coronary heart disease.
On the other hand, studies have found that it is not a good idea to eat nuts or legumes in place of poultry or seafood.
There was little evidence that replacing red meat with nuts or legumes reduced the risk of coronary heart disease.
Researchers also discovered that using olive oil in place of butter, nuts in place of red meat, or nuts in place of one egg daily was inversely related to the frequency of type 2 diabetes.
