Electric buses will be run at Mohalla level in Delhi: Gehlot

Presenting the budget for the financial year 2023-24, Delhi Finance Minister Kailash Gehlot on Wednesday made announcements related to the expansion of transport facilities in the National Capital Region. Over Rs 9,000 crore has been allocated in the budget for the transport sector.
The Delhi government’s budget has proposed to launch ‘Mohalla Bus’ scheme to provide transport facilities to the mohallas in Delhi and develop airport-like facilities at three bus terminals in the city. Presenting the budget for the financial year 2023-24, Delhi Finance Minister Kailash Gehlot on Wednesday made announcements related to the expansion of transport facilities in the National Capital Region. Over Rs 9,000 crore has been allocated in the budget for the transport sector.
Apart from the finance ministry, Gehlot, who also holds the charge of the transport ministry, said in his budget speech that by 2025, a fleet of 10,480 buses will be ready in Delhi. Presently there are 7,319 buses in the fleet of the Delhi government. Gehlot said, “80 percent of these buses will be electric. Mohalla bus scheme will be started to provide transport facility up to Mohalla level in the city. Under this scheme, 100 mohalla e-buses will be launched in the coming financial year while 2,180 buses will be added in the next two years.
He said, “A total of Rs 28,556 crore is estimated to be spent on the entire plan to bring Mohalla e-buses in the next 12 years. A provision of Rs 3,500 crore is being made for this scheme for the next financial year.” Charging facilities for electric feeder buses will be provided at all 57 bus depots in Delhi. The Delhi government said that for the first time, electric feeder buses will be operated in remote areas of the capital region.
Along with this, Gehlot has also proposed in the budget to build a new Interstate Bus Terminal (ISBT) in Delhi’s Dwarka area and develop airport-like facilities at the already existing ISBTs at Sarai Kale Khan and Kashmere Gate. The Delhi government also plans to build 1,400 bus queue shelters that will be equipped with digital screens that will display bus arrival and departure times.
