Essar to invest another Rs 2,000 crore in a project to extract methane from coal seams

Kolkata. Private sector oil, gas exploration and production company Essar Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Ltd. (EOGEPL) will invest another Rs 2,000 crore in the next one and a half to two years in the coal bed methane (CBM) project at Raniganj in West Bengal. The company has earlier invested Rs 5,000 crore in the Raniganj block. Under this, the company has drilled 350 wells and is producing nine lakh cubic meters of gas per day. EOGEPL Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Pankaj Kalra told PTI that an additional investment of Rs 2,000 crore would be made in the next one and a half to two years for drilling 200 more wells.
He said, “We are using state-of-the-art technology to increase the production from nine lakh cubic meters per day to 1.3 million cubic meters per day from the existing wells. It is expected to be completed in the next few months. ”Kalra said with the commencement of production from additional wells, methane production from coal seams from Raniganj is estimated to reach three lakh cubic meters per day. He said that the company currently has 35 per cent share in the methane produced from coal mines in the country. Drilling of additional wells is expected to raise the share to 90 per cent. Kalra also said that two shale gas wells would also be drilled in Raniganj this year.
