Magicpin on Thursday claimed that so far it has delivered around 20,000 orders for 40,000 kg of tomatoes at the rate of Rs 70 per kg to more than 90 pin codes in and around Delhi-NCR in just four weeks. The company claims that after this exercise, tomatoes will now be sold in Delhi-NCR at the rate of Rs 50 per kg.

Magicpin CEO Anshu Sharma also claims that his company is offering to provide maximum two kilos of tomatoes every week to its users without any delivery charge. The statement issued by the company said that NCCF and Nafed have significantly increased the quantity of tomatoes supplied to retail consumers by deploying their mobile vans at 70 locations across Delhi and 15 locations in Noida and Greater Noida. It added that with this partnership, Magicpin as the largest seller app on ONDC is executing the online sale of tomatoes to reduce the hassles of the consumers.

The retail price of tomato has touched Rs 200 per kg in some parts of the country amid supply disruption due to heavy rains. This has forced the government to import tomatoes for the first time. India is currently importing tomatoes from Nepal. Last week, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told Parliament that India has started importing tomatoes from Nepal amid a record rise in prices in the domestic market.

In July, fast food chain McDonald’s said it had stopped using tomatoes in its food items at most of its stores in northern and eastern parts of the country due to unavailability of quality products. Tomato being imported from Nepal

Indian National Consumer Cooperative Federation Limited (NCCF) has informed on Wednesday that the consignment of tomatoes coming from Nepal will be sold in Uttar Pradesh. NCCF has contracted to import 10 tonnes of tomatoes from Nepal. Along with imports, NCCF is also procuring tomatoes domestically on behalf of the Central Government and selling them to consumers at a subsidized rate. NCCF is ‘intervening’ at the retail level following instructions from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs.

He said that tomatoes get spoiled quickly. Because of this it cannot be sold in other parts of the country.

Tomatoes are being sold from mobile vans

Anees Joseph Chandra said that imported and locally procured tomatoes in Uttar Pradesh are being sold through mobile vans at select locations along with retail outlets. He said that tomatoes procured from major producing states of the country in Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan are being sold at a concessional rate of Rs 50 per kg.
