Urdu poet Munawwar Rana breathed his last at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh after cardiac arrest on Sunday. Munawwar Rana was 71 years old at the time of his death. The Urdu poet was suffering from lung and throat infection since 2017 and was also undergoing regular treatment for kidney problems, for which he had to undergo dialysis. Born on November 26, 1952 in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, Munawwar Rana is known for his significant contribution to Urdu literature, especially his ghazals. In 2014, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for his poem ‘Shahdaba’ . However, he returned the award alleging ‘intolerance’ in the country. In 2012 he was awarded the Mati Ratan Samman by the Shaheed Shodh Sansthan for his services to Urdu literature.
He also received other awards throughout his career including Amir Khusro Award, Mir Taqi Mir Award, Ghalib Award, Dr. Zakir Hussain Award and Saraswati Samaj Award. Rana, a renowned personality of Urdu poetry, is admired by people all over the world. His ability to capture the essence of life was evident in his work. Munawwar Rana’s poem ‘Maa’, which is considered one of his most famous works, holds a special place in the world of Urdu literature.
