FCI should use technology, reduce operating costs, become ‘corruption-free’: Goyal

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday asked public sector Food Corporation of India (FCI) to adopt modern technologies in its overall functioning, reduce the cost of operations and win the trust of farmers and poor beneficiaries under the public distribution system. . Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Goyal also asked FCI and its employees to stop any wrongdoing and not tolerate corruption in their operations. He was addressing a program organized on the 60th foundation day of FCI, the government’s nodal agency for procurement and distribution of food grains. FCI was established on January 14, 1965.
Addressing the event, Goyal praised FCI for ensuring fair prices to farmers for their produce and providing food grains to 81 crore people. He has asked FCI and its employees to focus on three priorities. The Union Minister said, “First of all we must win the trust of our farmers as well as the beneficiaries (poor and lower-middle income earners).
Winning the trust of the people should be our first priority and we should reach out to them with sensitivity and honesty.” He stressed on doing the procurement, storage and distribution of food grains in a transparent manner with complete honesty. Secondly, Goyal said, “We must embrace technology and digitalization to improve operational efficiency.” Referring to the third thing, the minister said, “The amount that we are spending, how can we control the expenditure and how can we reduce it.
