State-owned Food Corporation of India (FCI) has suspended two senior officials and transferred 30 others in a major clean-up drive after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a Deputy General Manager (DGM) level officer. A DGM-level officer was arrested by the CBI for allegedly taking bribes from private millers in exchange for allowing the supply of substandard food grains.
Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra told reporters here on Thursday that the suspension and transfers have been ordered so that the investigation is not allowed to be affected in any way. Chopra said, “What happened in FCI is very unfortunate. We are very concerned about the happenings in FCI. So two officers have been suspended as they were involved in these activities and CBI has conducted raids. Chopra said that FCI will ensure that all the guilty are punished and action is taken as per law. The CBI launched Operation Kanak on 11 January in reference to alleged corruption in FCI. After arresting a DGM-rank officer from Chandigarh, searches were conducted at 50 places in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.
A total of 74 accused have been named in the FIR by the CBI after a six-month-long intelligence operation to identify suspects in the cartel of officials, rice mill owners and middlemen who were allegedly involved in corrupt practices. According to the CBI’s FIR, an organized syndicate of FCI officials took bribes ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 4,000 per truck unloaded from private mills to godowns, in order to hide the low-quality grain supplied by them and Other benefits may be given.
Responding to questions related to corruption in FCI, Chopra stressed the need to address systemic issues in the institution. “We have a ‘whistle-blower’ policy, for which we are now trying to ensure that it is widely publicized and disseminated,” said Chopra. An ‘Automatic Grain Analyser’ will be brought in to check the quality of the intervention foodgrains. Chopra said that this machine would be installed at 50 locations this month and depending on its success, it would be gradually extended to all FCI procurement centres.
