New Delhi. The Finance Ministry on Monday said that Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) has played an important role in the empowerment of citizens deprived of banking services and so far about 51 crore people have benefited from it. PMJDY was launched on August 28, 2014 with the goal of financial inclusion. Its objective was to provide every unbanked adult with access to banking facilities and basic bank accounts.
The Finance Ministry has written on social media platform X that 55.5 percent of the total beneficiaries of this scheme are women. According to the ministry, till November 22, a total of Rs 2.10 lakh crore were deposited in these accounts. However, in the total 4.30 crore accounts opened under this scheme, only zero amount was deposited. The reason for this is that there is no obligation to keep any minimum amount in Jan Dhan accounts. The ministry said in another post that more than 41 crore beneficiaries have benefited from the accident insurance of Rs 2 lakh given under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana.
Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana has benefited more than 18 crore beneficiaries and their families. The Finance Ministry said that the reform initiative in public sector banks is ensuring customer access and satisfaction through transparent and smart banking. According to this, the net non-performing assets (NPAs) of scheduled commercial banks (SCBs) declined to Rs 1.36 lakh crore (0.95 percent) in March 2023 compared to Rs 2.04 lakh crore (1.67 percent) earlier.
The gross NPA ratio of commercial banks has declined to 3.87 percent by March 2023, from 9.07 percent in March 2019. The Finance Ministry said that the digital payments revolution continues in the country and by October 2023, transactions through UPI will cross the Rs 7,000 crore mark.
