S Nagarajan, general secretary of All India Bank Officers, said that according to the Negotiable Instruments Act, the government has to notify every Saturday as a holiday. He said that there has been a demand for a five-day week in banks for a long time. The ownership of the government bank is with the government, so it also has a role in it. RBI has to accept this proposal as it does the timing of most of the interbank activities. A senior official said that the IBA has agreed to the proposal.
40 minutes extra work
IBA officials could not be contacted about this. According to sources, bank employees will have to work 40 minutes extra daily. The bank will remain open from 9.45 to 5.30. Stock markets have also decided to extend trading hours on the lines of western markets. Bankers say that now most of the customers are using mobile banking, ATM and internet banking facilities. But still some customers prefer to visit the branch. Cash deposit machines and passbook printing machines are being used more and more in the branches.
