New Delhi, 31 October (Hindustan Reporter). The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has increased monitoring of sweets to prevent adulteration during the festive season Diwali. FSSAI has directed its 4,000 state-level officers across the country to intensify surveillance of retail sweets sellers and manufacturers.
FSSAI Chief Executive Officer G. Kamla Vardhan Rao told the media on Tuesday on the sidelines of ‘Eat Right Summit’ 2023 that generally the consumption of sweets increases on the occasion of Diwali. We have directed our officials in states and union territories to intensify surveillance to check adulteration of sweets. A national survey is being jointly conducted by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and the Quality Council of India to check the quality of milk and milk products. About 10 thousand samples will be collected in the survey. This survey will be completed in a month.
Meanwhile, FSSAI has increased the number of surveillance samples to one lakh this year, which will increase to seven lakh next year. In India, adulteration is mostly done in milk. Consumption of sweets increases during the festival of Diwali, due to which shopkeepers start adulterating the sweets. The most adulterated commodity in India is milk and most of the sweets are made from milk.
