What is HUID number
HUID can be called Aadhar Card of jewelry. Like in the village society, every person has his own Aadhaar number. Similarly, each piece of jewelry has a unique HUID number. If you enter this number on the BIS app or website, then the complete horoscope of that jewelry will open. Meaning whether it is necklace or bangle or ring. What is the weight of that jewelry, how many carats of gold is it made of. When was that jewelry made and which manufacturer made the jewelry. This will make it easier for the customers and bring transparency in the business.
Why Hallmarking?
Before understanding why hallmarking, let us understand hallmarking. The hallmarking of a gold ornament is a certificate of its purity. Till a few years back, jewelers were free to get their gold jewelery hallmarked and sell it without hallmarking. But it has been made mandatory from June 1, 2021 itself. Although till now HUID numbers were of four or five digits. Now from April 1, 2023, six digit HUID number has been made mandatory.
Jewelers still have problems
The central government had told two years ago that from April 1, 2023, only jewelry with a six-digit hallmark sign would be sold. But jewelers have termed this period as insufficient. Jewelers say that according to the old system, it is not justified to invalidate the stock of 4 and 5 digit jewellery. It should be withdrawn with immediate effect. Jewelers say that they still have stock of jewelery with four and five digit HUID numbers.
What happens to hallmarked jewelry with four or five digits?
If a jeweler has four or five digit jewellery, then he will have to convert it into six digit. Hallmarking fees will have to be paid for six digits. For this, a fee of Rs 53.10 will be charged on one piece of jewelry. In this, the Hallmark Center will get a fee of Rs 40.50. BIS will get royalty of Rs 4.50 per song. Also, the government will earn GST of Rs 8.10 on every piece of jewellery.
Why the six digit hallmark
The six-digit Unique ID (HUID) hallmark introduced by the government carries more information than ever before. According to the new rule, now a six-digit mixed code of letters and numbers will be inserted on every jewellery. In this special code, the jeweler or manufacturer who made the jewelry, when it was made, how many carats of gold the jewelry is made of, which jewelry means chain or ring or any other jewelry, weight of the jewelry and the name of the hallmarking center. Information will be hidden.
How to know how many carat gold by code
As such, the government has allowed gold jewelery of many carats. But usually in the market, customers buy only 22 carat, 18 carat and 14 carat gold jewellery. The HUID number for 22 carat jewelery will have the code 22K916. Meaning that this jewelry has 91.6 percent gold. 18K gold jewelry will have the code 18K750. This jewelry will have 75 percent gold. 14K gold jewelry will have the code 14K585. Meaning that only 58.5 percent of it is gold.
Cheating will be completely banned
Vimal Goyal, President of Delhi Bullion and Jewelers Welfare Association, says that hallmarking of jewelery is absolutely the right step. Till now it used to happen that the people of the villages and towns used to buy some jewelery with their hard earned money. Goldsmiths were taking money from them for 22 carat gold whereas they were getting goods of 18 carat gold. This was a fraud. Now this tradition will come to an end. People will get the gold for which they are paying.
