Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia will inaugurate the double elevated Eastern Cross taxiway and fourth runway of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on July 13. Initially, the new runway named ‘Runway 29 Right and 11 Left’ (29R/11L) will be used exclusively for ‘Departure’. After the launch, Delhi airport will become the only airport in the country with four runways. Currently, it operates with a three-runway system known as the northern runway and the southern runway, designated as 27–28 North and 29 South.
According to the Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP), the commissioning of Runway 29R with associated and other taxiways and the re-designation of existing taxiways at LGLA will take place from July 13, 2023. Runway 11V29R is not usable for landing and may only be used for departure. According to Delhi ATC data, the opening of the fourth runway will increase the movement of flights, to more than 100 flights per hour. Currently, Delhi ATC handles around 86 flights per hour.
On the other hand, the senior official said that with the Eastern Cross Taxiways (ECT), the first of its kind in India, the distance an aircraft has to cover after landing on the third runway and going to Terminal 1 is less than 9 km. It will be reduced to 2 km. The 2.1 km long and 202 m wide ECT will reduce the time passengers spend on the tarmac before and after flight take-off and landing. Meanwhile, suspension of GoFirst and reduction in flight activities during peak hours have affected the total number of flights.
