San Francisco. Google has laid off hundreds of employees working in its hardware, voice assistance and engineering teams as part of cost-cutting measures. According to the statement issued by the company, this layoff has been done because “Google is moving towards investing responsibly in the company’s biggest priorities and important opportunities ahead.” The statement said, “Some Teams are continuing to make these types of organizational changes. This includes eliminating some positions globally.
Google previously said it was eliminating a few hundred positions, mostly affecting its augmented hardware team. The cut comes after executives at Google and its parent company Alphabet agreed to cut costs. About a year ago, Google had said it would lay off 12,000 employees, or about six percent of its workforce. Earlier this week, Amazon laid off hundreds of employees at its Prime Video and Studio units. It will also lay off about 500 employees working on its livestreaming platform Twitch.
