Google launches new accessibility tool for Maps, Search, Chrome

New Delhi (Uttam Hindu News): Google has introduced new accessibility features and updates on Maps, Search and Chrome to help people complete their daily tasks faster and easier. The new identity attribute for the disability community is now available on Google Maps and Search, giving customers more information about a business and giving merchants the option to self-identify as a community member.

To make it more accessible and useful for people who are blind or have low vision, screen reader capabilities in Lens in Maps will be coming to iOS starting Tuesday and Android later this year.

The feature is based on the wheelchair-accessible transit navigation option in Maps, which shows people stair-free transit routes.
Earlier this year, Google made it easier for everyone to find wheelchair-accessible places on Google Maps for Android and iOS.
Now, the company is starting to bring that information to business and put pages on Android Auto and Maps for Google-built cars.
When you search for a place in Google Maps and click on it, a wheelchair icon will appear if the destination has a step-free entrance, accessible restroom, parking, or seating area.
Earlier this year, Google introduced a new feature in the Chrome address bar that detects typos and lets Chrome display suggested websites based on what you think.
“This feature is expanding to Chrome on Android and iOS, so you’ll have the same experience on all your devices,” the company said.
For the low-vision community, with Magnifier, you can use your camera to zoom in on something, just like you would use a physical magnifying glass.
The app can also improve text readability, whether you’re reading a menu or documents, with the ability to adjust controls including color filters, brightness and contrast.
Magnifier is available on Google Play for Pixel 5 and above, except Pixel Fold.
‘Guided Frame’ lets you use your front- and rear-facing cameras to take photos of your pet, dinner or even documents.
The company said that this update is already available on Pixel 8 and 8 Pro and will also be released for Pixel 6 Plus later this year.
