New Delhi : The central government on Thursday directed sugar mills not to use sugarcane juice for ethanol production in 2023-2024. The government is worried that this could reduce the country’s sugar production, which would lead to higher prices. Ethanol is supplied to oil marketing companies like Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum for mixing with petrol.
The government notification said sugar mills can continue to produce ethanol from B-heavy jaggery, which is a by-product in sugar production, to meet the requirement of blending with petrol. An official notification said, ‘In exercise of the powers conferred under sections 4 and 5 of the Sugar (Control) Order 1966, all sugar mills and distilleries are directed to ensure compliance with the ESY (Ethanol Supply Year) 2023- Do not use sugarcane juice/sugar syrup for ethanol with immediate effect in 24.
“Ethanol will continue to be supplied from existing offers received from B-heavy jaggery by oil marketing companies (OMCs),” the Food Ministry’s notification said. The Center had announced to increase the minimum price of sugarcane by Rs 10 per quintal to Rs 315 per quintal to increase returns for farmers in the 2023-24 season starting in October.
