New Delhi, 07 December (Hindustan Reporter). The central government has taken a big step to control sugar prices. The government has directed sugar mills not to use sugarcane juice for ethanol production. In fact, the government is worried that this may cause sugar production to fall, which will increase prices.
The Union Food Ministry on Thursday directed all sugar mills and distilleries in a letter to managing directors and chief executive officers not to use sugarcane juice for the production of ethanol. However, the ministry has said in the letter that ethanol will continue to be supplied to oil marketing companies from B-heavy molasses.
The Ministry, in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 4 and 5 of the Sugar (Control) Order 1966, has directed all sugar mills and distilleries to sell sugarcane for ethanol in the ESY (Ethanol Supply Year) 2023-24 with immediate effect. Do not use sugar juice. The Food Ministry’s letter said that the supply of ethanol derived from B-heavy molasses to oil marketing companies (OMCs) will continue.
It is noteworthy that the target of the Central Government has been to mix up to 20 percent ethanol in petrol. Under this, the government wants to reduce the import of crude oil. However, after this decision of the government, there has been a sharp decline in sugar stocks.
