Government considering quality control norms for electrical equipment

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has issued the draft Control Order for these products after consultation with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
New Delhi. The government is planning to bring all electrical appliances for domestic and commercial use under mandatory quality norms. The move is aimed at curbing import of substandard goods and promoting domestic industry. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has issued the draft Control Order for these products after consultation with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
Under the draft order, the norms will be applicable to all electrical equipment used for domestic, commercial or similar applications whose voltage does not exceed 250V single-phase AC or 415V three-phase AC. These products include vacuum cleaners, electric hair shavers, massage devices, electric steam cookers, electric heating devices, electric coffee makers and electric food processors. Under this order, no production, sale, trade, import or storage of these items will be allowed without the BIS mark.
