Government implements stock limit to control wheat prices, export ban continues

New Delhi : In order to control the prices of wheat and wheat flour in the wholesale and retail market of India, the government has imposed a limit on the storage of wheat on Monday. Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said that in order to control prices, the government will release 1.5 million tonnes of wheat to bulk consumers and traders under the first phase at the end of June. Sufficient stocks of wheat are available in the country. He said that at present there is no plan to change the wheat import policy. He said that the ban on wheat export will continue as before. Also, there is no proposal to allow further export of sugar.
Government took this step for the first time in 15 years
According to media reports, for the first time in 15 years, the government has imposed a stock limit on wheat with immediate effect till March 2024 on Monday to curb rising wheat prices. The report said that the government has also decided to sell 1.5 million tonnes of wheat to bulk consumers and traders from the central pool in the first phase under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS).
Eight percent increase in wheat prices
Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said that the prices of wheat have increased in the last month. There has been an increase of about eight percent in the prices at the mandi level. Although the wholesale and retail prices have not increased that much, but the government has imposed a stock limit on wheat. He said that this ‘stock limit’ has been imposed on traders, wholesalers, retailers, large retail chain sellers and processors till March 31, 2024.
No change in the policy of reducing import duty
Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said that there is no plan to change the policy to reduce the import duty on wheat as there is enough supply in the country. He made it clear that the ban on export of wheat will also continue.

He said that the country has sufficient stock of wheat. Farmers and traders have stocks and some anti-social elements also have stocks. We are not thinking about import as there is no shortage of wheat in the country. He said that apart from wheat, the government has also decided to launch rice under OMSS and the quantum will be finalized later. The official also said that there is no proposal to allow further export of sugar.
