New Delhi. The ban on onion exports will continue till the already announced deadline of March 31. The government is continuing its efforts to keep prices under control and ensure domestic availability. A top official gave this information on Tuesday. On December 8, 2023, the government had banned the export of onion till March 31. Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh said, “The ban on onion export has not been lifted. let’s Going On. There is no change in the present situation.” He said that the top priority of the government is to ensure adequate availability of onion at reasonable prices to the domestic consumers.
Amid news of removal of export ban, wholesale onion prices in Lasalgaon, the country’s largest wholesale onion market, increased by 40.62 percent to Rs 1,800 per quintal on February 19, from Rs 1,280 per quintal on February 17. Sources said the ban is unlikely to be lifted after March 31 even before the general elections as Rabi (winter) onion production is expected to be low due to low ‘coverage’ especially in Maharashtra.
Onion production in the Rabi season of 2023 has been estimated at 2.27 crore tonnes. Agriculture Ministry officials will assess Rabi onion ‘coverage’ in major producing states Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat in the coming days. Meanwhile, after approval from the inter-ministerial group, permission has been given to export onions to friendly countries considering their relations and other conditions.
