There is a continuous increase in the prices of sugar across India. Due to low production of sugarcane, the Central Government has taken a big decision with the aim of providing relief to the public. To prevent sugar prices from rising, the central government has decided to ban the production of ethanol from sugarcane juice.
After taking this decision, the Central Government has issued a notification. It is believed that this decision of the government will prove beneficial in curbing the rising sugar prices across the country. The government has taken this decision for 2023-24.
Ethanol will not be made from sugar juice
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Food Supplies of the Central Government has issued an order stating that sugar juice or syrup will not be used to make ethanol. This order has been implemented with immediate effect. Under the Essential Commodities Act 1955, the Food and Public Distribution Department looks after the production, sale and availability of sugar in the country. The job of this department is to ensure stable sugar prices in the country and ensure availability of sugar. MDs and CEOs of all sugar mills and distilleries have been informed about this order. After the government’s decision, diversion of ethanol equivalent to 21.4 lakh tonnes of sugar will also stop.
After the government took this decision, all sugar mills have been instructed not to produce ethanol from sugarcane juice and syrup. The government has told all the officials that ethanol will be supplied from B heavy molasses. Now only sugar will be made from sugarcane juice. It will not be used to manufacture ethanol.
