Government will run ‘wide reach’ program on completion of five years of Jan Aushadhi Yojana

The government plans to launch a mass outreach program across the country later this week to mark the completion of five years of the Jan Aushadhi scheme. Programs have been planned in various cities from March 1-7 to create awareness about the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP). Till January 31 this year, 9,082 Jan Aushadhi vends were functioning across the country, selling around 1,759 medicines and 280 surgical products.
A top government source said on Tuesday, “Around 12 lakh people visit these sales centers daily across the country. Now many developing countries are also interested in starting this scheme in their respective countries.” He said that the cost of medicines available under PMBJP is 50-90 per cent less than the prices of branded medicines.
The source said that during the last financial year, PMBJP achieved sales of Rs 893.56 crore, which resulted in savings of around Rs 5,360 crore to the common man of the country. Sources said in the current financial year till February 15, the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI), the implementing agency of the PMBJP, registered sales of over Rs 1,000 crore, leading to savings of around Rs 6,000 crore for citizens .
