Bihar Alcohol Ban: Liquor prohibition, which had been going on for almost 30 years, has been abolished in Manipur. After this, the sale and consumption of liquor has been legalized here. Meanwhile, alcoholic beverage manufacturing body Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC) urged the Bihar government to lift the ban on the sale of liquor. The body said that doing so will help boost the state’s revenue collection. CIABC also said that ending prohibition in Bihar will boost the economy there, end the illegal trade of poor quality liquor and prevent the tragedies caused by poisonous liquor. CIABC Director General Vinod Giri said the Manipur government has taken a positive step and will help the state earn annual tax revenue of Rs 600-700 crore and tackle the menace of illicit liquor sales. He said that Bihar government should also follow this and lift the liquor ban.
Huge loss to government revenue
Vinod Giri, director general of the Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies, said Bihar is paying a ‘heavily price’ for the prohibition policy in the form of proliferation of illegal and spurious liquor, incidents of poisonous liquor, rise of crime syndicates and loss of legitimate government revenue. He said, Bihar can end liquor prohibition in such a way that the government can get revenue for the development of the state without compromising on the desired social goals. He said that we have suggested that liquor factories will hire 50 percent women among their employees, which will lead to real economic empowerment of women. We have also proposed to impose a special cess on the sale of liquor to finance de-addiction and rehabilitation centres. However, State Prohibition Minister Sunil Singh has already said that it is not at all possible to end liquor prohibition in Bihar.
Nitish government will conduct survey on liquor ban
It is told that a survey on liquor prohibition is going to be conducted by the Bihar government. CM Nitish Kumar himself had given this instruction to the officials on De-addiction Day. The government understands that the survey will reveal who are in favor of liquor ban and who are against it? This will show how many people are in favor of it. It is believed that after December 15, the survey work will start in the entire state. A questionnaire is being prepared for the survey, which will make it easier to get people’s feedback whether they are in support of prohibition or not. The questionnaire being prepared for this survey is being finalized. Apart from this, family income, socio-economic status of the family and some other questions will also be included in this survey.
Survey was conducted many times before
Even before this, many surveys were conducted regarding the prohibition law, in which it was revealed that a large number of people had given up the habit of drinking. Even in the beginning of 2023, a survey was conducted by Chanakya Law University in collaboration with Bihar Rural Livelihood Project i.e. Jeevika, in this survey it was revealed that 1.82 crore people had given up alcohol. But, this time the survey going to be conducted is being said that after this survey, Nitish Kumar will take back the liquor ban law. CM himself has told many times from the public platform about the good changes brought about in the home and society by not drinking alcohol.
