Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh has written a letter in this regard to six industry chambers including Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), FICCI, ASSOCHAM and PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) as well as several manufacturers.
The companies to which the letter has been written include Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Blue Star, Kent, Whirlpool, Voltas, Bosch, Havells, Philips, Toshiba, Daikin, Sony, Hitachi, IFB, Godrej, Haier, Eureka Forbes and Lloyd. . He said that introducing a warranty or guarantee period at a time when the consumer is no longer in a position to use the product is an unfair trade activity under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. In a letter to the industry, retailers’ associations and manufacturers of electronic goods, Singh has advised manufacturers of refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines etc. to revise the sales warranty or guarantee policy. He said that the warranty should start from the date of its installation i.e. its use instead of the date of purchase.
“Electronic items are generally installed in homes by trained technicians,” the statement said. In such a situation, unless they are properly installed in the premises, consumers are unable to use such goods. It has been observed that this reduces the total warranty period. It will be in his interest if warranty is given to the consumer at the time he uses the product in question. It says that this problem increases even more in case of purchases made through e-commerce. Delivery of products purchased from there takes additional time. The letter highlights the importance of strengthening trust between companies and consumers.
