Greater Chennai decree: Pay property tax in March, else 2% fine

Chennai : The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has issued an order to the residents living here, saying that they should pay the property tax by the end of March, otherwise be prepared to pay a fine of two per cent. According to media reports, out of about 13 lakh property tax payers in Chennai, about five lakh people have not paid property tax.

In a statement issued by the Greater Chennai Corporation, it has been said that after the general revision effect in the year 2022, more than eight lakh people had paid their property tax. He said that if the residents pay the property tax within the first 15 days of the beginning of the financial year, they will get a rebate of 5 per cent. He said that the residents can pay the tax through postmen or directly on the website of the municipal body or also through Paytm.

Property tax in Chennai known as Sothu Vari

The property tax in Chennai is known as ‘Sothu Vari’. Here you can pay property tax online and offline. The Greater Chennai Corporation adopts a Fair Rental Value (RLV), which is used to calculate the half-yearly rental tax on properties within the Chennai City Corporation limits. There are 15 zones under the Chennai Municipal Corporation. Property tax can be measured and levied online as well as offline.

How to pay property tax in Chennai

Here’s how property tax can be paid on TNURBAN ePay portal

  • Go to the TNURBAN epay website.

  • Click on the Property Tax option from the menu.

  • Select your District, Corporation/Municipality and Ward from the drop-down list.

  • Enter your Property Tax Assessment Number (PTAN) or old Property Tax Unique Identification Number (PUTIN) and click on “Get Statement”.

  • Verify the property details displayed and click on “Make Payment”.

  • Select the payment mode and follow the instructions to complete the payment.

  • You can make the payment using Debit/Credit cards, Net banking, UPI or E-wallets. After successful payment, a receipt will be generated, which you can save or take a printout for your records.
