GVK has given this statement in this matter a day after Gandhi’s allegation. A GVK spokesperson told PTI, “The decision to sell stake in Mumbai airport to Adani was taken by the management and no ‘outside pressure’ was put on us for this.”

Hyderabad. Diversified business conglomerate GVK Group on Wednesday clarified that there was no “outside pressure” on it to sell its stake in Mumbai airport. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had on Tuesday alleged pressure on the group in the Lok Sabha. He had said in Parliament that the Government of India, using agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), took over the Mumbai airport from GVK and handed it over to Adani. GVK has given this statement in this matter a day after Gandhi’s allegation. A GVK spokesperson told PTI, “The decision to sell stake in Mumbai airport to Adani was taken by the management and no ‘outside pressure’ was put on us for this.”

After the report of US-based financial research and investment company Hindenburg Research, there has been a lot of ‘uproar’ about the Adani group. In this report, the Adani Group has been accused of fraud in the transaction. GVK Group Vice Chairman Sanjay Reddy in a conversation with a TV channel explained the circumstances that led to the stake sale in Mumbai airport. Reddy said the group wanted to raise funds for the airport business.

He said Adani Group chief Gautam Adani had approached him and said he was interested in the airport and whether the GVK group was willing to do a deal with him. Reddy said, “.Adani talked about the completion of the deal in a month. It was very important for us. Whatever we did was in the interest of the company. We had to repay the loan to the financial institutions and hence the deal had to be completed as soon as possible. Since no other investor showed interest, we struck a deal with Adani.
