Prime Minister Modi said that I am confident that India will continue to get continuous support from the IOC. India is ready to host a global event on a large scale. The world has seen this during the hosting of G20. He further said that it is very special to have the 141st session of the International Olympic Committee in India. It is a matter of great pride for us to hold the IOC session in India after 40 years. He said that over the years, India has proved its ability to organize all types of global sports tournaments. We recently organized the Chess Olympiad in which 186 countries of the world participated. We also hosted the Women’s Football Under-17 World Cup, Men’s Hockey World Cup, Shooting World Cup. He said that India also organizes one of the world’s biggest cricket leagues (IPL) every year. Currently, Cricket World Cup is also going on in India. In this atmosphere of enthusiasm, everyone is also happy to hear that the IOC Executive Board has proposed to include cricket in the 2028 Olympics. Referring to India’s ancient sports tradition, the Prime Minister said that sports has been an important part of our culture and our lifestyle in India. Every celebration of ours is incomplete without sports in the villages of India.

We Indians are not just sports lovers but we are people who live sports and this is reflected in our history spanning thousands of years. He said that be it the Indus Valley Civilization, the Vedic period thousands of years ago, India’s heritage regarding sports has been rich in every period. In our texts written thousands of years ago, it is said that one is proficient in sixty-four disciplines, many of which are related to sports like horse riding, archery, swimming, wrestling etc. He said that no one loses in sports. There are simply winners and learners in the game. The language and spirit of the game is universal. Sports is not just competition, it gives humanity an opportunity to expand itself. Whoever breaks the record, the whole world welcomes him. The Prime Minister said that sports also strengthen our sense of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’. That is why our government is working to promote sports at every level. Khelo India University Games, Khelo India Youth Games, Khelo India Winter Games and the soon to be held Khelo India Para Games are examples of this. He said that sports is another powerful medium to connect the world. He said that sports is not just a medium to win medals but also a medium to win hearts. Sports is everyone’s and for everyone’s.

But when one looks at the Olympic medal table, every Indian realizes that the country still has to do a lot to make it to the first five positions in the world. Players will be able to showcase their skills at their best in the sports field only when the state and central governments strengthen the sports infrastructure in the state and country in a planned manner. If the government gets approval to organize the 2036 Olympics on Indian soil, then it will definitely bring a revolution in the Indian sports world.
