Mumbai The share of residential home loans in total loans has increased over the past 11 years to 14.2 per cent in 2023, compared to 8.6 per cent in March 2012. This information was given in the recently released Financial Stability Report (FSR) of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The report also said that there is good growth in the housing sector and there was a 21.6 percent increase in home sales in the fourth quarter (January-March, 2023) of the last financial year. New projects also contributed significantly to this growth.
The report said that the share of housing loans in the total loan has increased from March 2012 to 14.2 per cent in March 2023 after 11 years. The share of commercial real estate (CRE) in total credit during this period ranged between 2.0-2.9 per cent. The report said that the total credit given by the banking sector to the real estate sector stood at 16.5 per cent. Given the secured nature of such loans, the default rate was less than two per cent.
