New Delhi: India’s ranking on the UN’s Human Development Index (HDI) improved one place to 134th among 193 countries in 2022, compared to 135th among 191 countries in 2021. India ranks 108th among 193 countries with a score of 0.437 in the Gender Inequality Index (GII), 2022. India was ranked 122nd among 191 countries with a score of 0.490 in GII-2021.
The Ministry of Women and Child Development said that India has improved by 14 places in GII-2022 as compared to GII-2021. However, the country also has the largest gender gap in its labor force participation rate, which stands at 47.8 percent between women (28.3 percent) and men (76.1 percent). The recently released Human Development Report (HDI) 2023- 24 states that after the improvement in HDI, India has been ranked 134th among 193 countries in 2022.
India’s HDI level improved to 0.644 in 2022 while it was 0.633 in 2021. This data has been published in the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) report ‘Breaking the Gridlock: Reimagining Cooperation in a Polarized World’. In the year 2022, India saw improvement in all HDI indicators, including life expectancy, education and per capita gross national income (GNI). Under this, life expectancy increased from 67.2 to 67.7 years while per capita GNI increased from US$6,542 to US$6,951.
Life expectancy increased by 9.1 years
The report said, ‘India has witnessed remarkable progress in human development in the last few years. Since 1990, life expectancy at birth has increased by 9.1 years, expected years of schooling has increased by 4.6 years while average years of schooling has increased by 3.8 years. India’s per capita GNI has increased by about 287 percent.
It said, ‘India’s performance in reproductive health is better than other countries in the Medium Human Development Group or South Asia.’ The ministry said that over the last 10 years, India’s rank in the GII has continuously improved, indicating progressive improvement in achieving gender equality in the country. In 2014 this rank was 127, which has now become 108.
