If you sleep with the AC-cooler running at night, then you may have to pay heavy electricity bills as well. Actually, the Government of India has planned to bring a new tariff plan regarding electricity bills. Under this scheme, separate teams will have to be given for your day and night electricity. According to the new plan of the government, after April 2024, if you run the air conditioner more at night to avoid the heat, then you will have to pay more electricity bill.
Electricity rate will be reduced during the day
In the new electricity tariff, the rate of electricity during the day will be 20 percent less than the current price. But during peak hours at night, the electricity rate will become expensive. Electricity rate will increase by 10 to 20 percent. Actually, under the TOD rule, different rates of electricity will be applicable for different times of the day. With the implementation of this system, consumers will be able to avoid doing high electricity consumption works like washing clothes and cooking during peak electricity rates.
When is the new system going to be implemented?
The new system of electricity rate will be applicable from April 1, 2024 for commercial and industrial consumers with demand of 10 kW and above. This rule will be applicable from April 1, 2025 for all other consumers except agriculture. However, for consumers with smart meters, the TOD system will be applicable only when they get such meters installed.
Two changes in electricity tariff system
Regarding the new rule, the Ministry of Power has said that the Government of India has amended the Electricity Consumer Rights Rule 2020. Under this, two changes have been made in the existing electricity tariff system. The ministry has made these changes under the provisions related to the introduction of TOD fee system during the day and smart meters. Accordingly, instead of charging electricity at the same rate throughout the day, the user will be charged for electricity at different times of the day.
what is the new system
According to a statement by the Ministry of Power, under the new tariff system, the rate of electricity during the day will be 10 to 20 percent less than the normal rate, while this rate will be 10 to 20 percent higher during peak hours, especially during peak hours. At the same time, Union Power and New and Renewable Energy Minister RK Singh believes that the TOD system will definitely benefit consumers and electricity providers.
