A new blueprint has been presented in the Parliament in the General Budget to enhance the country’s technology agenda and boost digital infrastructure. The speech also discussed steps in new age areas like 5G. The importance of the digital ecosystem has also been explained.
New Delhi. The Union Budget presented in Parliament on Wednesday outlined several initiatives to advance the country’s technology agenda and boost digital infrastructure. Presenting the Union Budget for the financial year 2023-24, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized that the reason for India’s growing stature at the global level is the unique world-class digital public infrastructure with many achievements like “Aadhaar, Ko-WIN and UPI”. Huh. In his budget speech, the Finance Minister also discussed steps in new age areas like artificial intelligence (AI) and 5G along with technical infrastructure and digital ecosystem.
The budget also proposes to promote domestic value addition in mobile phone manufacturing through customs duty relief on import of certain components and raw materials such as camera lenses. “Our vision for Amrit Kaal includes a technology-driven and knowledge-based economy with sound public finances and a strong financial sector,” he said. He said that to promote innovation and research by start-ups and academia, a National Data Governance Policy will be brought in.
He said that to realize the vision of “Make AI in India and Make AI work for India”, three Centers of Excellence for artificial intelligence will be set up in top educational institutions. Sitharaman underlined that digital payments are on the rise. Digital payments are getting wider acceptance, he said. In 2022, such transactions are expected to increase by 76 percent and by 91 percent in value. The financial support for this digital public infrastructure will continue in 2023-24 as well.
The Finance Minister said that as a result of various steps of the government, including a phased manufacturing programme, the production of mobile phones in India has increased to 31 crore units valued at over Rs 2,75,000 crore. In 2014-15, its number was 5.8 crore units and the value was around Rs 18,900 crore. He said to further boost domestic value addition in mobile phone manufacturing, customs duty relief on import of certain parts and raw materials like camera lenses and continuation of concessional duty on lithium-ion batteries for another year has gone.
