In-principle approval for setting up 21 new greenfield airports

New Delhi: Expansion of airports including upgradation of infrastructure, facilities at airports is a continuous process, which is undertaken by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) or the respective airport operators based on operational requirements, traffic, demand, commercial viability etc. AAI and other airport operators have undertaken capex plans of over Rs.
AAI and other airport operators have launched a CAPEX plan of over Rs 98,000 crore, which includes development, upgradation, modernization of various brownfield airports and development of greenfield airports to meet the growing demands, during 2019-24. 25,000 crores by involving about Rs.
The Government of India has also formulated a Greenfield Airport (GFA) Policy, 2008 for the development of greenfield airports in the country. As per the policy, if any developer, including the state government, wants to develop an airport, they will have to identify a suitable site and get a pre-feasibility study done for building the airport and a proposal to the central government for ‘site clearance’ have to present. This was followed by an ‘in-principle’ approval.
So far the Government of India has given ‘in-principle’ approval for setting up 21 new greenfield airports. Of these, 12 greenfield airports have become operational. This information was given by the Minister of State in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, General (Dr.) V.K. Singh (Retd) in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.
