India can become a $5 trillion economy much before 2028: Hardeep Singh Puri

Davos. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday said India can become a $5 trillion economy much before 2028. He also stressed that the energy transition needs to be carried out in a systematic manner to protect the interests of the country’s large population. Puri, minister of petroleum and natural gas as well as housing and urban affairs, said India is aware of its commitments towards sustainability goals and will meet all the goals on time while meeting the needs of the growing economy.
He said this at the CII-EY session on ‘Accelerating India’s energy transition for sustainable economic growth’ on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting 2024. Referring to various macroeconomic parameters, he said, “I don’t think we need to wait till 2028 to become a $5 trillion economy. If you look at the current situation, this should happen much before 2028. He said, “I believe that change should be systematic because there should be a clear blueprint for change in nature. It should have all the safeguards in place that will ensure that no decision is taken without thinking.”
Puri said this is even more important for a country like India, which is now also the world’s most populous country. “When it comes to energy, the relationship between economic growth and energy is very important,” the minister said. Now we are close to becoming a $4 trillion economy, but the fact is that we need to take care of a very large section of our population. He also said, “I believe that the energy transition will be focused on by 2030.” We will accomplish all our goals. Our green hydrogen policy will be massively successful.” Puri said, ”We are on track to meet our targets on aviation fuel. India today offers a great potential for biofuel blending. We are meeting all our targets ahead of schedule. The establishment of the Global Biofuels Alliance is another example of our success.
