Diabetes: According to a research by ICMR published in the UK medical journal ‘Lancet’, India now has over 101 million people with diabetes as compared to 70 million people in 2019. While the numbers are stabilizing in some developed states, they are increasing at an alarming rate in many other states. It has been told in the research that there is a need to stop it in the states where it is increasing rapidly.
15 percent of the country’s people are pre-diabetic patients
According to a report, at least 136 million people or 15.3% of the population have prediabetes. The highest prevalence of diabetes is observed in Goa (26.4%), Puducherry (26.3%) and Kerala (25.5%). The national average is 11.4%. The study, however, warns of an explosion of diabetes cases in the next few years in states with low prevalence such as UP, MP, Bihar and Arunachal Pradesh.
Diabetes cases stable in Puducherry and Delhi!
“Pre-diabetes cases are less in Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Chandigarh as compared to diabetes cases. In Puducherry and Delhi, they are almost equal and hence we can say that the disease is stabilising,” said the study’s first author Dr Ranjit Mohan Anjana, who is also the president of the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, but states with fewer cases of diabetes In the US, scientists have recorded a higher number of people with pre-diabetes.
Diabetes prevalence in UP is 4.8%
For example, UP has a diabetes prevalence of 4.8%, the lowest in the country, but 18% are pre-diabetic, compared to the national average of 15.3%. Dr Anjana pointed out that for every person with diabetes in UP, there are about four people with pre-diabetes. This means that these people will soon become diabetes patients. While for every person with diabetes in Madhya Pradesh, there are three persons with pre-diabetes. “Sikkim is an exception where the prevalence of both diabetes and pre-diabetes is high.
