India reduced import of solar modules from China by 76%, Make in India boosted domestic manufacturing, see figures

According to a report, there has been a huge decline of 76 percent in India’s imports of solar modules from China in the first half of 2023. This came to light in a report on Thursday. This shows India’s commitment towards self-reliance in solar manufacturing. According to the report of global energy research institute Amber, on an annual basis, India’s solar module imports from China declined from 9.8 GW in the first half of 2022 to only 2.3 GW in the same period in 2023. Nashwin Rodrigues, India power policy analyst at Amber, said India’s dependence on China for solar module imports is actually reducing after 2022. Domestic manufacturing is gaining momentum due to recent policy interventions. As India moves closer to self-sufficiency in solar manufacturing, dependence on Chinese modules and cells is no longer an obstacle.

China’s solar panel exports increased by three percent

India had started imposing customs duty of 40 percent on solar modules and 25 percent on solar cells from April 2022 to cut imports and promote local manufacturing. The report also said China’s solar panel exports grew by an impressive three percent in the first half of 2023, reaching a total of 114 GW worldwide. Last year in the same period it was 85 GW.

Need to create an enabling policy environment

Nashwin Rodrigues, Amber’s India power policy analyst, said that to keep manufacturing in India at a strong pace, an enabling policy environment must now be created to ensure that solar installations keep pace with the National Electricity Plan. To boost manufacturing in the country, India imposed customs duty of 40 percent on solar modules and 25 percent on solar cells from April 2022. This reduced the country’s import dependence while also fostering a strong domestic solar manufacturing ecosystem. With this, the country’s commitment can be said to be a big step towards sustainability and energy self-reliance. India is continuously taking steps to tackle the world’s biggest problem, global warming. For this, an ambitious solar target has been prepared. Under which India has set a target of achieving 500 GW installed power capacity from non-fossil fuel based resources by 2030.

‘China’s dominance in solar panel manufacturing market’

According to Amber’s report, solar energy is being developed in the world through rooftops. China’s dominance in the solar panel manufacturing market is long established. Its impact on the global market is up to 80 percent. More than half of the solar panels exported from China in the first quarter of this year were destined for Europe, accounting for 52.5 percent of total exports. Its exports from China to Europe increased by 47 percent year-on-year, which means 21 GW. Which reached a total of 65 GW during the first half of 2023 compared to 44 GW in the same period last year. It is worth noting that after Europe, Chinese exports expanded the most in Africa and the Middle East. South Africa has seen a 438 percent (2.7 gigawatt) increase in solar panel imports from China compared to the first quarter of last year. This resulted in an overall solar energy development of 187 percent (3.7 GW) in Africa. After Africa, the Middle East imported a 64 percent increase (2.4 GW) compared to the former during the first half of 2023.

Status of solar energy in India

Solar energy is developing rapidly in India. Many schemes are being run by the Central Government which is motivating people to use solar energy. By the year 2021, India was ranked third in the world, with the capacity to generate 41 GW of solar energy. The government has set a generous target that by 2030, 40% of all the country’s energy will be generated from solar energy. Investment in solar energy sector is increasing rapidly. This investment is being made by entrepreneurs and government schemes. Various solar energy projects are underway in India, in which solar panels and other technologies are being used to generate energy. The Government of India has supported various solar energy schemes with seed capital and subsidies.
