New Delhi: Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Masatsugu Asakawa met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. During this, he told that ADB will give 20-25 billion dollars in five years to support India’s aspirations for fast, inclusive and green growth. This multilateral lending agency is headquartered in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. The bank said in a statement that its president discussed a range of issues, including India’s infrastructure, social development and ADB’s support for climate action, in his meeting with the prime minister. ADB is finalizing a new five-year Country Partnership Strategy (CPS) for India after a comprehensive stakeholder consultation process.
Asakawa said, “ADB will provide multilateral support to India’s key priorities, including the PM Gati Shakti Initiative, building cities of the future, domestic resource mobilization, and the development of basic services in disadvantaged districts.” He congratulated Modi on assuming India’s presidency of the G-20 and expressed ADB’s support for the G-20 agenda. ADB is supporting India’s priorities as a guest international organization at the G-20 meetings and leaders’ summits, the statement said. Asakawa also met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and outlined efforts to secure $4 billion in annual regular loans from ADB’s sovereign operations over the next few years. The Finance Ministry tweeted that Sitharaman insisted on laying the foundation of ‘India at 100’. In view of this, the two leaders also discussed the India-ADB Country Partnership Strategy 2023-2027, which is under finalization. Asakawa welcomed the Finance Minister’s priority for green growth in the General Budget 2023-2024. He told Sitharaman that following the guidance of Prime Minister Modi, ADB has set up the Secretariat of SASEC (South Asia Sub-Regional Economic Cooperation) in its India office.
