Non-coking coal imports stood at 13.8 million tonnes in March 2023, compared to 12.6 million tonnes in the same month last year. Coking coal imports in March 2023 stood at 3.96 million tonnes, compared to 4.76 million tonnes in March 2022. India is among the top five coal producing countries in the world.
New Delhi. India’s coal import to increase by 30 percent to 162.4 million tonnes in the financial year 2022-23. This figure was 125 million tonnes in the previous financial year. In its latest report, mjunction said that the import of coking coal increased by 5.44 per cent to 54.4 million tonnes in 2022-23. In the previous financial year, this figure was 51.6 million tonnes. Non-coking coal imports stood at 13.8 million tonnes in March 2023, compared to 12.6 million tonnes in the same month last year. Coking coal imports in March 2023 stood at 3.96 million tonnes, compared to 4.76 million tonnes in March 2022. India is among the top five coal producing countries in the world.
However, it has to meet some part of its coal requirement through imports. The country is heavily dependent on imports for coking coal, which is mainly used to make steel. Vinay Verma, managing director and CEO of mjunction, said continued high demand for coal in India as well as lower prices overseas led to a rise in imports in March. He said that these trends may continue in the coming months, as this summer temperature is expected to be above average.
