India’s G-20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant inaugurates India’s first model G-20 summit

Sonipat: India’s G20 Presidency aims at inclusive, strong and sustainable development. This was stated by India’s G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant at the prestigious public lecture ‘India’s Presidency of the G20: The Way Forward’ to mark the inauguration of the Jindal Global Center for G20 Studies at OP Jindal Global University (JGU). Amitabh Kant outlines India’s political and development narrative, key priorities, initiatives to reshape and reconfigure the world and plans to execute meetings for the G20 ahead of the leaders’ summit in September 2023 Talk about observation.

Congratulating JGU for emerging as India’s top private university and its position in international rankings, he said, “G20 is important because it accounts for about 85 per cent of global GDP and about 78 per cent of global trade, in the world. Covers 90 percent of patents and about two-thirds of the global population. The G20 Presidency moves from country to country every year and different countries have different approaches and priorities. It is very important to study, test and analyze it because G20 is essentially an economic grouping for growth and development.

Therefore, the Jindal Global Center for G20 Studies at OP Jindal Global University holds the key to understanding how each country manages the issues and challenges facing the G20 community. The Center will bring academic rigor and insight and the G20 Secretariat will be happy to consider the outcome of these deliberations. The post-Covid era has seen nearly 200 million people falling below the poverty line.

Nearly two decades of work done to eradicate poverty have been found in the soil while one-third of the world is facing recession. There is a challenge before about 75 countries of the world facing the global debt crisis. And above all, there is a huge challenge of climate action and climate finance. There is a geopolitical crisis in Europe at the moment where there is a war going on for more than a year and in addition to all this, you saw the financial crisis in the US or the collapse of the Silicon Valley banks and the cascading effect in other parts of the world Is.”

Providing a vision and a way forward, Kant outlined strategies for transformation as India assumes the leadership of the G20. He said, “First and foremost is the political narrative that India will put forward, second is the priorities to shape the world and third is how well we execute this Presidency on the ground. It is important to understand this because India has done a lot of digital transformation in the last few years. India today pays almost 11 times more than the US and Europe.

During Covid we provided 2 billion vaccinations to our citizens which was done digitally. A study by the Bank of International Settlements says that (digital milestones) India has achieved in the last eight years, which normally takes 50 years. With regard to, all over the world is facing a huge recessionary trend. It is important that we talk about inclusive, sustainable development, because without development we will not be able to lift people out of poverty and development alone will have a huge impact on the lives of citizens in the Global South.

“Third, we face the challenge of climate action and climate finance,” Kant underlined. As India becomes more industrialised, we will become the third biggest polluter in the world. And therefore India should become the first country in the world to industrialize without decarbonizing the world.” Amitabh Kant concluded, “Digital transformation will drive India’s growth for the next three decades. India’s model is unique and if you look around the world, there are four billion people who do not have a digital identity.

There are two billion people who do not even have a bank account. There are 133 countries in the world that do not have a fast payment mechanism. India’s experience can be taken to other parts of the Global South and really help transform the lives of citizens and finally, our next priority is women-led development. This whole cycle of women driving growth and progress and development is very important.” Professor (Dr.) C. The Jindal Global Center for G20 Studies is a part of this university, as a multidisciplinary center that will cover all 12 schools of the university. Kant belongs to an illustrious group of Indian civil servants who have made transformative contributions to India’s development. In his earlier incarnations he has taken initiatives that have resulted in public policy reforms as well as transformational changes in the society.

Jindal Global Center for G20 Studies will be a permanent center located at OP Jindal Global University, which will be able to engage in research knowledge creation, thought leadership including hosting seminars, conferences, lectures and workshops on various issues related to G20. We have identified five important agenda points, including a global conference of universities from each G20 country that we have recently concluded with about 100 universities from G20 countries, to hold a G20 Ambassadors Conclave that will discuss the future of diplomacy Will foster a dialogue, host a Global Justice Symposium with a focus on bringing together lawyers and judges from G20 countries to discuss and debate the state of the justice system and world stability to engage on issues of environment and climate change Hosting the Forum and hosting the Global Policy and Development Dialogue to bring together policy makers and academics to discuss issues facing the world of policy development.

Highlighting the milestone of Jindal School of International Affairs (JSIA), Ravi Thapar, Professor and Executive Dean, Jindal School of International Affairs, said, “This is a very momentous occasion for JSIA, a think tank, which is now a part of the G20.
