New Delhi: The country’s largest airline IndiGo is looking to start flights to Nairobi, Jakarta and some Central Asian destinations. Giving this information, IndiGo CEO Peter Albers said that the company is now focusing on internationalisation. Amid growing competition in the Indian market and Air India placing a huge order for aircraft, the IndiGo chief said the Indian market has a lot of potential for growth going forward and has room for multiple airlines.
He said, “A lot is happening in the Indian aviation landscape… The fact is that the Indian aviation sector is entering the next phase with the consolidation being done under the Air India group. It’s a natural evolution of the market.” “I want competition,” Albers said in an interview here. It is good to have competition, but it will be a competition that goes hand in hand with the growth of the market.” IndiGo has a fleet of over 300 aircraft and currently operates to 76 domestic and 26 international destinations. Recently flights have also been announced for two more domestic destinations – Nashik and Dharamshala.
He said that the Indian aviation market is very vibrant and dynamic and is improving very strongly. Albers said Indigo has made a strong comeback and India’s economic growth is helping it grow. The airline operates approximately 1,800 flights per day and currently has approximately 80 per cent domestic and 20 per cent international seat availability. “We will launch new flights to Nairobi (Kenya) and Jakarta (Indonesia) in the coming summer. We are also looking at some destinations in Central Asia, but haven’t decided yet… Internationalization is a big part of our agenda.” He said Nairobi and Jakarta are important for tourism, trade and connecting with people of Indian origin.
