New Delhi. Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and two domestic engine manufacturers are working on the possibility of blending five per cent ethanol in diesel. SSV Ramkumar, director (research and development) of the country’s largest petroleum company IOC, said on Monday that the trial of blending ethanol in diesel is going on in the laboratory and at the research and development centers of two engine makers. “Two major Indian heavy-duty diesel engine manufacturers are working on blending five per cent ethanol in diesel with Indian Oil and another oil marketing company,” he said at an event organized by SIAM, a body of automakers.
He said that one of the major apprehensions in this whole issue is that there might be some problems with the fuel injectors in the mixture. “So we are eagerly experimenting and seeing the effect of ethanol blending,” Ramkumar said. I think we will tell you something about this in the next six months. At present, 10 per cent ethanol is mixed in petrol and the government is considering doubling this quantity by 2025. He said blending of ethanol with diesel is very important as it is the most widely used fuel in the country’s transport sector. Ramkumar said that studies on the use of E-20 fuel in existing vehicles are nearing completion, but the long-term trials would be completed only by July this year.
