If there is decay in the teeth of your little ones, then it will also affect the health of their mouth in future, so special care should be taken for the teeth of small children.
Baby tooth decay also known as baby bottle dental caries or early childhood caries or nursing bottle caries is basically a hole or cavity in the teeth.
Many mothers send their babies to bed with a bottle of milk, this is not a good habit as it can lead to tooth decay.
Cavities are caused by sugar and bacteria living in the mouth. The bacteria turn the sugar into an acid that can damage the outer layer of teeth called enamel.
Children’s tooth enamel is much thinner than that of adults, so it is easier for bacteria to cause cavities.
Saliva helps to wash away the acid produced by the bacteria but if the saliva is less, then the chances of getting a cavity are more.
Clean your baby’s teeth, gums and tongue at least twice a day with a clean wet cloth or sterile cotton, after feedings and at bedtime.
Do not put the baby to sleep with a bottle of milk in his mouth, especially avoid giving sugary drinks and juices in between meals. Avoid giving sticky snacks or chocolates which stick to the teeth and last for a long time
Start brushing as soon as the baby’s first tooth erupts. Use fluoride toothpaste for babies. Visit your dentist regularly for early detection of cavities.
