New Delhi: Even after seven decades of independence, arrangements for safe drinking water have not yet been made in every house of the country. There are still many villages where people have to walk miles to get drinking water. The Central Government has started the Jal Jeevan Mission to provide tap water to such homes only. Earlier, work was being done at a slow pace in this direction. But in recent times it has increased a lot. Now the situation is such that every second a tap connection is being installed in a new house.

60 new home connections every minute

Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat told here on Friday that work is going on fast on Jal Jeevan Mission, a plan to provide pure drinking water to every household in the country. Its speed is also increasing rapidly. If we talk about the year 2023, then from January till now 60 connections are being made available every minute under the mission. He informed that so far 8.50 crore tap connections have been added under the Jal Jeevan Mission. If we talk about the year 2019, then only 3.23 crore houses were connected with the tap connection.

PM Modi had announced

On 15 August 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Jal Jeevan Mission from the ramparts of the Red Fort. He had then said that by the year 2024, all the families of the country have to be provided with pure drinking water from the tap through the Jal Jeevan Mission. When Modi made this announcement, only 3.2 crore houses i.e. 15 percent of the houses in the country were being provided drinking water.

To reach 19.40 crore families in the country

The Union Minister informed that there are a total of 5 lakh 94 thousand 240 villages across the country. About 19.40 crore families are living in these. When PM Modi announced the Jal Jeevan Mission, at that time it was a big challenge to make tap water available to all the families living in the country. This target was huge. But when the work started in this direction, so far under the mission, tap water connections have been given to 8.50 crore houses. In this way, till now 60 percent houses have been provided tap water connection under this scheme.

work going on fast

He said that except in the villages of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, work is being done in this direction at a fast pace everywhere. The project is underway in all states and the target of providing tap water to all households by 2024 will be achieved.
