Jammu and Kashmir’s Bhaderwah Rajma, Sulai Honey get ‘GI’ status

Jammu: The famous Bhaderwah Rajma of Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir and Sulai honey of Ramban have got Geographical Indication (GI) status. Officials said that after getting the GI status, these popular products of the region will be recognized internationally. Organizations in Jammu had last year applied for GI tag for eight different traditional items from different districts of Jammu region.
Director Agriculture Production and Farmers Welfare-Jammu KK Sharma said, “Doda and Ramban districts got two geographical indicators today. There is Rajma of Bhaderwah, which is called red bean. The second is honey. This is Sulai honey of Ramban district. These are two important products of the Chenab Valley. He said that these products are the means of socio-economic development of the region. GI status will help in doubling the income of farmers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted organic Sulai honey to Queen Elizabeth during her visit to the UK in 2015. Sharma said that the department had initiated the process of Geographical Indication for these products. Finally got permission on Tuesday. Geographical Indication or GI Tag is a label that is applied to a particular product.
It designates a particular geographic region or country of origin. This status prevents misuse by third parties of such products. He said GI status is a form of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) that identifies goods originating from a specific geographical location and having a specific nature, quality and characteristics associated with that location.
The director said, “Now only the authorized user has the exclusive right to use the Geographical Indication in respect of these products. He said, “Nobody can copy it beyond their geographical areas.” GI status to a product increases the economic prosperity of the people of that region.
