Veteran actor Naeem Syed, popularly known as Junior Mehmood, died on Friday at his home in Khar, Mumbai after a long battle with stomach cancer. He said goodbye to this world at the age of just 67.
The actor’s family confirmed his death in a statement. The statement said, “Junior Mahmood died at his residence at 2:15 am. He was suffering from stomach cancer. May his eternal soul rest in peace.”
Junior Mahmood’s son Hasnain told The Indian Express, “We came to know about his fourth stage stomach cancer only 18 days ago. We took him to Tata Memorial Hospital.
The dean there told that treatment and chemotherapy at this stage would be very painful. The hospital had suggested that we take care of him at home.” Junior Mahmood is survived by his wife Lata and two sons.
Junior Mehmood was recently in the news for his ‘last’ wish to meet his co-stars Jeetendra and Sachin Pilgaonkar, who fulfilled his wish and many pictures of his meeting went viral online. Earlier, as soon as Johnny Lever came to know about his condition, he came to meet him.
Recently, a user on X (formerly Twitter) had shared Mahmood’s wish with the fans. He wrote in X Post, “Junior Mehmood was the first child star of his time. He is undergoing treatment for stage 4 cancer in the hospital. He has expressed his desire to meet Jitendra. He has also worked with him in many films. He wants his childhood friend Sachin Pilgaonkar to also meet him. I request Jitendra and Sachin sir to fulfill his wish. This could be his last wish. Soon after the post went viral, Sachin’s daughter Shriya said that her father is in constant touch and has also met him.
Junior Mehmood started his film career as a child artist with Mohabbat Zindagi Hai (1966). He acted in films like Naunihaal, Caravan, Haathi Mere Saathi, Mera Naam Joker, Suhaag Raat, Brahmachari, Kati Patang, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Geet Gaata Chal, Imandaar, Baap Nambari Beta Dus Nambari, Aaj Ka Arjun, Gurudev.
The actor worked on television for some time in shows like ‘Pyaar Ka Dard Hai Meetha Meetha Pyaara Pyaara’ and ‘Ek Rishta Partnership Ka’. He also produced and directed many Marathi films.
Naeem Syed was given the screen name Junior Mehmood by late comedy icon Mehmood after sharing screen space in the 1968 film Suhaag Raat. The actor’s last rites will be held today at Santa Cruz cemetery.
