Kerala SC/ST petrol pump owners to go on hunger strike in front of HPCL-Mumbai

Thiruvananthapuram (Best Hindu News): The Kerala Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Petroleum Pump Owners Association will observe a one-day symbolic hunger strike on May 15 in front of the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) office in Mumbai. Association President C.K. Mohini said in a statement that HPCL did not follow the process of conducting a personal hearing of SC/ST people before canceling their dealership.
He said that various judgments of the Supreme Court have said that the dealers should be heard before terminating the dealership, but this was never followed by HPCL.
Mohini said that she and many others had submitted several representations to the higher authorities of HPCL to revoke the dismissal order, but they were never heard. He said that the SC/ST Dealers Association has now sent representations to the President and the Prime Minister.
He said that many dealers have lost their houses, and are heavily in debt and on the verge of suicide. Several senior officials of the petroleum company were directly involved in dismantling the dealerships and alleged that this is mainly due to the fact that the dealers belong to the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities.
Mohini said the dealers have written to the HPCL chairman requesting him to restore the dealership or else they will stage an indefinite strike in front of the petroleum company’s office.
