Mumbai Union Textiles Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday said the government is planning to set up 10-11 testing laboratories across the country to ensure high quality of cotton and textiles for domestic consumers as well as export markets. Goyal, who also holds the charge of Commerce and Industry Ministry, said, “I have discussed with the Textiles Ministry, Department of Consumer Affairs. They will work closely with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to establish high quality cotton and textile testing laboratories.
“In the next 15 days, i.e. by December 16, we will approve laboratories across the country with an investment of about $60-70 lakh,” he said. The four-day 81st session of the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) began on Saturday. Addressing the plenary meeting, the minister said, “We want the most modern and high quality testing laboratories to open in different parts of the country. So that we can ensure that the clothes that reach consumers and are exported are of better quality.
Goyal said the government will initially start 10-11 laboratories in different parts of the country. “100 per cent funding for these laboratories will be provided by the central government to support the private sector, especially farmers,” the minister said. The aim is to ensure that gradually they get recognition for producing better quality cotton and they start getting good prices for it.” Goyal also introduced the ‘Kasturi Cotton Bharat’ brand. It is a value added premium quality cotton of the country.
He also said that with collective efforts across the value chain and technology, the government is confident that the country’s textile industry can grow to $250 billion by 2030 and textile exports can grow to $100 billion by 2030. Meanwhile, around 400 delegates will participate in the plenary meeting starting on December 5. It includes 300 foreign representatives from 35 countries. These include government representatives, industrialists, trade representatives, scientists and researchers from various cotton producing and consuming countries.
