Lawyers’ letter to the Chief Justice

600 lawyers, including senior advocate Harish Salve and Bar Council of India President Manan Kumar Mishra, have written in a letter to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the country DY Chandrachud that ‘We all are sharing our great concern with you. A particular group is trying to put pressure on the judiciary. This group is influencing the judicial system and trying to discredit the courts by making allegations as per their sordid political agenda. Due to these actions of theirs, the atmosphere of harmony and trust that defines the judiciary is being spoiled. Pressure tactics are common in political matters, especially in cases in which a politician is accused of corruption. These tactics are damaging our courts and threatening the democratic structure. This special group works in many ways. They refer to the golden past of our courts and compare them with today’s events. These are merely deliberate statements to influence decisions and put the courts in jeopardy for political gain. It is disturbing to see that some lawyers fight a politician’s case during the day and go to the media at night, so that the decision can be influenced. They are also creating the theory of bench fixing. This action is not only disrespect to our courts but also defamation. This is an attack on the dignity of our courts. Honorable judges are also being attacked. False things are being said about him. They have gone so far as to compare our courts with those countries where there is no law. Our judiciary is being accused of unjust proceedings.

Tagging a post made on ‘X’ with a copy of the above letter, the Prime Minister wrote, ‘Intimidating and bullying others is the old culture of Congress. It was only five decades ago that he called for a ‘committed judiciary’. They shamelessly seek commitment from others for their selfish interests but stay away from any commitment towards the nation. He claimed, ‘No wonder 140 crore Indians are rejecting him.’

Politics has already heated up in the country regarding the Lok Sabha elections, in such a situation the letter written by a special section of lawyers to the Chief Justice of the country has further heated up. Prime Minister Modi himself has made his position clear on the political aspect of this letter. During the Emergency, Indira Gandhi had been demanding a committed judiciary in the country and the reason was that the judiciary had given a decision against her which she was not ready to accept.
Today, when the lawyers who agree or are influenced by the ideology of Congress, along with targeting their fellow lawyers, are trying to target the Modi government and the BJP, their efforts are being made only to give political benefits to the Congress. Those writing letters during the election period are forgetting that the present judiciary has given not one but many such decisions, especially regarding the working style of the Central Government in the matter of electoral bonds, which clearly shows that the judiciary is not under any pressure. The letter written by Salve and his colleagues to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the country is just an attempt to give an issue to the opposition parties.
