Luxury buses operating in Himachal Pradesh, famous for tourism activities, will now have to pay a tax of Rs nine lakh annually. State Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri told reporters here on Thursday that around 250 luxury buses ply in Himachal Pradesh but do not pay any tax. In view of this, it has been decided to impose an annual tax of Rs 9 lakh on them. Agnihotri, who also holds the transport portfolio, said the move was aimed at increasing the revenue of the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC). HRTC is currently running at a loss of Rs 1,355 crore.
He said that the monthly income of HRTC is Rs 65 crore while the monthly expenditure is around Rs 134 crore. In such a situation, the state government has to bear the expenditure of Rs 69 crore. Agnihotri said that due to huge loss of HRTC, there is delay in payment of salary and pension. However, he assured the employees of the Transport Corporation that they would get their salaries by the seventh of every month.
