Mansa Musa was born in 1280. The Mali Empire was ruled by his elder brother Mansa Abu Bakr until 1312. After this he went on a long journey, then Mansa Musa I assumed the throne. Today’s Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Mali, Chad and Nigeria were then part of the Sultanate of Musa. There used to be huge deposits of gold. In those days the demand for gold was very high and half of the world’s gold was with Moses. They developed cities like Timbuktu and Gao which were important cultural centers. He brought architects from the Middle East and Africa who designed buildings in these cities.

Mansa Musa had inherited wealth but he made Mali the richest sultanate in Africa. Along with salt and gold, they also earned a lot from ivory. In 1324, when he left for Mecca via Egypt for Hajj, the discussion of this journey started happening all over the world. Till then nobody knew Mali outside West Africa. According to Arab historians, there were thousands of people and dozens of camels in his convoy. 136 kg of gold was loaded on each camel. In Cairo, Moses met the Sultan of Egypt. His people shed gold like water. Due to this, the price of gold fell in Egypt for the next 12 years.
After returning from Hajj, Musa started giving new forms to his cities. Mosques and other public buildings were built. Timbuktu emerged as a major center of Islamic learning. Islamic scholars and architects came to Mali from all over the world. In that period, the status of Mali reached its peak in the world. Musa died in 1337 but his sons could not run the empire. In this way, his sultanate was divided into small pieces over time. Today Mali is one of the poorest countries in the world. The country has been grappling with the problem of hunger and malnutrition for the past decade. Also there is a big problem of water in this country.
