Many entrepreneurs show interest in bamboo products in Arunachal Pradesh

Itanagar. After closing down the poultry and piggery units for Nyapi Doni, it was a risky venture to choose a new business. But his grit and determination made his way to overcome the risk and today he is an established bamboo entrepreneur in Arunachal Pradesh. If harnessed properly, the potential of the bamboo industry can make money in the northeastern state, as the state has 74 species of this grass, which is called ‘green gold’. Dhoni, who started ‘Arunachal Bamboo’ industry in 2019 after shutting down her poultry and piggery business, now earns over Rs 50,000 a month by selling various products including furniture, household items and jewellery.

In view of the increasing demand of bamboo in the country, many entrepreneurs in Arunachal Pradesh have shown great interest in bamboo based industry as it fetches good prices for low investment products. “Bamboo industry is more comfortable and lucrative than other businesses because of the craze for indigenous bamboo products,” said Doni, who has a large bamboo plantation. He claimed that there is a huge demand for furniture and household items made by him. Another woman entrepreneur, Teki Ana, who runs Poma Cane and Bamboo Industry near here, said that their endeavor is to popularize the unique bamboo products of the state in other parts of the country.

Anna earns around Rs 80,000 per month. However, the sales sometimes exceed two lakhs. Especially the income increases by setting up stalls in the exhibitions. Arunachal Pradesh Bamboo Resource and Development Agency (APBRDA) Chief Executive Officer Ganguwa Mertem said that there are 74 species of bamboo in the state, of which Bambusa tulda, Dendrocalamus asper, Dendrocalamus hamiltonil, Cephalostachys pergracil, Thyrostachys oliveri are in high demand.
